Volume 13 - 1985/86 - SINEWS

Preamble – A change of format.  This time I will list the contributors and the issues they raised.  There were no personal vendettas in Volume 13 which seems to have settled into an information-giving publication.  I have ignored the items for sale although AMSTRAD figures prominently.  The main contributor of the year was Terry Baker in his capacity as a union representative and I have included a two-page contribution of his verbatim since I think it sums up the spirit of the age (and probably this age too).

Terry Baker

Issue 21  ( March 1986)
‘Somebody with much more time, patience and arithmetical skills than I has recently been making a comparison between the old 1983 Green Phone Book and the new 1985 Pink version.   According to this source, roughly speaking in 1983 there were listed some 78 Administrative Staff, 270 Teaching Staff and 52 Technicians.  In 1985, there were 107 Administrative Staff (+37%) 234 Teaching Staff  (-13%) and 47 Technicians (-10%).  Over the period, the ratio of Teachers/Technicians to Administrative Staff  fell by 36%.’

Several questions are posed by  Terry – how long before the Administrative Staff is as large as the Teaching /Technician Staff, assuming the current rate of progress, and how long before the state is reached when the entire staff will be comprised of Administrators?

Issue 33  (July 1986)

‘Members of staff might be asked to change rooms and also notify when they will not be available during holiday periods’.  As Chairman of the NATFHE Branch, Terry gave advice along the lines that there are union guidelines that must be followed by management to accord with Health, Safety and Welfare Committee stipulations.’

Issue 13   (November 1985)

Below is the full report of Terry Baker from his first attendance at a meeting of the new governing body – (apologies for the quality of the first page of the report which I hope is legible).
