Volume 12 - 1984/85 - NEWSCHEET

Preamble

Although headed NEWSCHEET for the first edition, subsequent editions were under the banner SINEWS reflecting the change of the college to an institute.   Despite such an upheaval the weekly matters did not seem to comment on the new arrangement very much.  Computer seminars were much to the fore with Maggie Ross being a regular advertiser of courses, seminars etc only some of which are reported here.

(1)   Gill McClelland thanked staff for her leaving presents as did Grania Casswell (after 11 years at the College).

(2)  This issue was entitled SINEWS without explanation for the title change. The Department of Mathematics and Computing advertised a list of short courses in programming and microprocessors for staff.

(3)  The Print Room reported that the Xerox copier had notched up 3 million copies in its first year of operation.

(4)  John Bennett wrote about the difficulty of parking mentioning by name those in receipt of reserved places ‘in receipt of the patronage of the Common Services Officer’.  He even mentioned reserved places for people who do not exist – Bursar, Finance Officer.  The Common Services Officer used this issue to offer a Crockery Amnesty and also to prohibit staff using the side door of the Refectory as a short cut to the car park.

(10) Cliff Carter reminded staff to apply for Staff Development by the due date.  Terry Murphy and Ann Tupper, as Governors of the Institute, had sent a letter to all the other Governors about the College of Maritime Studies seeming to be an operationally autonomous college within the Institute.  This, they argued, was ‘no way compatible with the Institute concept as agreed by the  Governors and Academic Board of the old Southampton College of Higher Education’.

(12)  The Rev. Andrew Rossiter, College Chaplain, gave details of the Christmas Carol Service.  Kathy Howard advertised a sale of garments from the Fashion Department.
